January Athlete of the Month is Matt Christenson!

Matt comes to Philia early in the morning and is a great source of energy and encouragement. 


How long have you been at CF Philia and what made you want to join?

I joined CFP on Aug. 28th 2014. I'd heard about CrossFit for a couple years but never really new what it was until I saw the games in July of 2014, I was glued to the tv and have been constantly varying ever since!

How is your life different after being a member at CF Philia?

Every aspect of my life has changed for the better since becoming a member CFP, but more than anything I am not only more physically fit but mentally tough as well.

Whats your favorite part about the gym or a favorite moment?

My favorite part is the atmosphere and the relationships you build with the other members and that they become more than just fellow members but great lifting partners and friends.

What do you do for a living?

I work on an offshore oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico

What are your interests outside of work and the gym?

The only real interest I have would be my family, my wife Traci, son Burke and daughter Leighton. But I do like music and dancing (when no one can see me) haha

What has been your favorite workout/movement?

My favorite workout is one of the classic benchmark WOD's, one of "the girls" FRAN

Give us an interesting fact that we don't already know about you.

If I was a fairy princess I would be tinker bell, just ask the wife and kids and my all time favorite villain in any animated movie is Vector, from Despicable Me. Does anyone know where I can get some coconutties? Haha

December Athlete of the Month

The December Athlete of the Month is Sarah Van Brocklin!

How long have you been at CF Philia and what made you want to join?

I joined Philia in February 2014, so I have been there almost 2 years! I was already doing CrossFit and I had heard great things about Philia from my cousin Ashley Meyer, so I thought I would try the gym out. I have never looked back since. I love my Philia family!

 
How is your life different after being a member at CF Philia?
 
I am a stronger person, both mentally and physically, thanks to coaches at Philia. I have learned to do things I never thought I was capable of doing. I have learned to set aside my pride, and listen to my body when it needs recovery. I am a happier person, with more friends who share my interests, love for movement, and putting in work.

 
What's your favorite part about the gym or a favorite moment?

My favorite part about the gym is the phenomenal coaching. My lifting technique has improved, and therefore the weight I am lifting has continued to go up. It is awe-inspiring to see the coaches work with all of the members, and watch people do things they thought were impossible.


What do you do for a living?

I am a chiropractor at Adair Chiropractic in North Liberty. I try to help as many people live a pain-free and functional life through spinal adjustments, soft tissue and mobility/stability work, and ART.

 
What are your interests outside of work and the gym?

Worshiping the One that gave me all of my strengths and weaknesses, my Savior. I also love running, biking, shooting, jeeping, and snowboarding with my husband, Josh, and being outdoors with our black lab Maddie. I also love to spend time with my family and friends, especially if it involves food and/or dancing.


What has been your favorite workout/movement?

I love any workout that has a lot of barbell movement in it, and I especially love squats and deadlifts.

October Athlete of the Month

The October Athlete of the Month is Levi Wood!

Levi is a regular at the 5am class! If any of you night owls decide to get up that early make sure you say hi!


How long have you been at CF Philia and what made you want to join?
I have been with CFP for 4 months. I wanted to get back into something competitive where I could push myself to be better. Additionally after our 2nd child I made my mind up that I was going to get back into shape and set a good example for our children.

How is your life different after being a member at CF Philia?
I actually look forward to getting up at 4:30AM twice a week! My self confidence is growing and my spare tire is shrinking.

Whats your favorite part about the gym or a favorite moment?
My favorite part is that I feel like I am constantly improving in all aspects of the workouts, and the people are awesome. Another favorite part about the gym is seeing Cody at 5AM....in all seriousness Cody is a great coach and I look forward to working with him each time I'm there.

What do you do for a living?
Operations manager for Ingredion Incorporated (a corn processing plant, formerly Penford Products) in Cedar Rapids.

What are your interests outside of work and the gym?
Two wonderful boys, Keller 2 years and Emerson 4 months. I also enjoy woodworking and spending time outdoors.

What has been your favorite workout/movement?
Being newer I don't have one favorite workout or movement. I really enjoy the total experience and total body movements/workouts vs. the traditional weight lifting/muscle group focus.

I'm a pretty good cook...not many interesting facts about me......

September Athlete of the Month

The September Athlete of the Month is Jason Reichart!! If you want to say hi Jason he frequents the 6 PM class most days.

How long have you been at CF Philia and what made you want to join?

I started Crossfit in January 2014 at ProFit gym. After a few months I became unhappy with their programming and decided to join another gym. Unfortunately, the gym I chose, Fit 2 Live, closed a month after I joined so I went back to ProFit while I researched other gyms. Another Philia member and a groupon led me to Philia. I joined in January 2015 and have enjoyed it ever since.

How is your life different after being a member at CF Philia?

I'm constantly in pain. Just kidding, kind of. I have made huge strength gains and improved my form tremendously on pretty much every Crossfit movement since I have joined. I have also made a number of new friends that I look forward to seeing whether I'm at the gym or on the street.

Whats your favorite part about the gym or a favorite moment?

My favorite part of the gym is definitely the people. I feel like I'm part of a family at Philia and that's something that I never really felt at any other gym I've been to. Also, the big fan is awesome.

What do you do for a living?

I am a Civil Engineer for the City of Iowa City.

What are your interests outside of work and the gym?

Outside of the gym I like to play disc golf, bowl, play video games, cook, and nap.

What has been your favorite workout/movement?

Favorite workout is Saturday morning Olympic lifting if that counts. I just really love the Olympic movements. Otherwise, anything with pull ups or box jumps.

Give us an interesting fact that we don't already know about you.

Interesting fact about me? While in college at UIowa is was a member of the Hawkeye Marching Band for 5 years (I was at the the Capital One bowl where Warren Holloway caught "The Catch" and that was pretty neat). And this year I will be reliving my college days as a member of the Alumni Band at the homecoming game on October 10. I will be the one sousaphones not breathing hard thanks to the great training I receive at Philia!

August Athlete of the Month

The August Athlete of the Month is Dena!

How long have you been at CF Philia and what made you want to join?  This month has been 3 years!! My husband was watching the crossfit games on ESPN and thought Crossfit would be a perfect match for me. He was right!

How is your life different after being a member at CF Philia?  I never thought I’d be lifting heavy weights, competing in triathlons, or  finishing Spartan Races. CF Philia helps me continue to push myself each day. I also love being part of such a great community at CF Philia but also being able to drop into any crossfit gym and feel just as welcomed.

Whats your favorite part about the gym or a favorite moment? Competing in the MAT games was a great experience for pushing my limits for 3 days as well as getting to know many of my gym mates better. I am also very proud to have started with CF Philia in its infancy stages and been able to watch it grow!

What do you do for a living? Medical Laboratory Scientist Supervisor at UIHC. A.K.A, I test blood

What are your interests outside of work and the gym? Traveling as much as possible, scuba diving, cooking, and spending time with my dogs Gabby and Hoot

What has been your favorite workout/movement? Cindy

June Athlete of the Month

The June athlete of the month is Sheila Stafford!! If you havent met Sheila yet make sure you say hey. Sheila generally hangs out at the 6 pm class.

I had Sheila answer a few questions, so we can get to know her better.

How long have you been at CF Philia and what made you want to join?

I've been at CF philia since January of this year. Along with a lot of people my new years resolution was to get back into shape and there was a groupon for CF philia, so I bought a month of classes. A couple of my good friends had encouraged me to try crossfit over the last couple years so I thought I'd at least give it a try. I was hooked after my first week!

How is your life different after being a member at CF Philia?

The biggest difference in my life since joining CF philia is that I look forward to going to the gym! I've never really felt that way before, but my weeks wouldn't be complete without it now.

Whats your favorite part about the gym or a favorite moment?

My favorite part of the gym is the community and the coaches. Everyone is so encouraging and the coaches truly care and help everyone achieve their goals, which is not something you always get at other gyms. My favorite moments are always when I do something I never thought I'd be able to do, whether it's lifting heavier or doing kipping pull ups (which I finally got a few weeks ago!).

What do you do for a living?

I'm a nurse at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, at the new IRL procedure suite.

What are your interests outside of work and the gym?

Outside of work I love to travel to other countries, although it's harder and harder to find time to do. I also love to be outside and in the sun. Put me on a boat, tubing, or water skiing and I'm in heaven.

What has been your favorite workout/movement?

My favorite movement is definitely deadlift, although I have to admit I kind of like thrusters.

Give us an interesting fact that we don't already know about you.

I'm sort of an adrenaline junky. On my bucket list is skydiving, and scuba diving with whale sharks.

May Athlete of the Month

Mays Athlete of the Month is Kyle Schuetz!

Here are some facts about Kyle that you may or may not have already known.


How long have you been at CF Philia and what made you want to join?

I have been a member at Philia since October of 2014. My previous gym, Fit2Live, pulled a Baltimore Colts and closed over night and I was in need of a new gym. Philia came highly recommended and was willing to let me start basically the next day. I started the next day and have been an active member ever since.

How is your life different after being a member at CF Philia?

I have really bought into the idea of clean eating and living as a vehicle to enhance athletic performance. When I started at Philia I weighed 215 pounds and could barely run a 800 without stopping; now I am down to 180 and have successfully run a sub 6 minute mile. The added athletic activity has given me a lot of additional energy. I feel as if I am much more productive in all aspects of my life including home life and work life.

Whats your favorite part about the gym or a favorite moment?

The camaraderie that is associated with a class style environment for workouts. I have met many interesting people I would call friends since I started that I may not have had the chance to interact with otherwise. My favorite moment was the first time I was able to successfully complete a muscle up (which I did on a whim on a Saturday).

What do you do for a living?

I am an IT Auditor for John Deere.

What are your interests outside of work and the gym?

My interests include cooking, running, hanging with my dog Bacon, collecting sneakers and vinyl records, and participating in outdoor activities (weather permitting).

What has been your favorite workout/movement?

I really enjoy squat cleans (now that I can do them) and burpees. Also, any workout that include running are generally my forte.

April Athlete of the Month

Aprils Athlete of the Month is Travis Blair!

How long have you been at CF Philia and what made you want to join?

A little over 2 years. I joined because I knew Ian and he encouraged me to stop by and check it out. I was also looking for something different from the regular gym.

How is your life different after being a member at CF Philia?

I'm in much better overall shape. I can do things I've never been able to do before. It's a big part of the reason I've remained Cancer free for 5 years.

Whats your favorite part about the gym or a favorite moment?

I love the coaches, and it's been great meeting the other members too. I enjoy the variety of the workouts.

My favorite moments are when I finish a WOD that I didn't think I could do when I walked in the door.

What do you do for a living?

I'm an Account Manager for White Cap Construction Supply.

What are your interests outside of work and the gym?

I enjoy spending time with my wife and 3 boys. Especially watching their activities and athletic events. I also enjoy biking and hiking.

Whats your favorite food?

Unfortunately my favorite foods are pizza and ice cream.

March Athlete of the Month

This months athlete is Mike Larson! Mike as been with us for 3 years and is a veteran member at the box.

How long have you been at CF Philia and what made you want to join?

​I've been a member at CF Philia since it began. I joined after a conversation with Ian about how I was "working out" but not really getting much out of my workouts. Looking back, it is obvious to me that I wasn't really working out. I was sort of working out. He convinced me to start CrossFit and I've loved it ever since.​

How is your life different after joining Philia?

My life is considerably different: my work out regimen ​is completely different; I structure my daily routine around when I am able to get to the gym; and CF Philia has made me re-evaluate the food that I put in my body. Since joining CF Philia, I've done the Whole30 twice and continuously eat paleo probably 75-80% of the time. I've learned how to fuel my body in a healthy fashion.

Whats your favorite part about the gym or a favorite moment?

My favorite movement is probably a power clean. And yes, I know I need to work on my squat clean (would have been really helpful during 15.1a).​ I enjoy the friendships and camaraderie that comes from working out with people of a same mentality. Nate and Matt make me laugh.

What do you do for a living?

I am a Program Manager for an Educational Testing company based in Iowa City.​

What are your interests outside of work and the gym?

I enjoy reading, drinking good wine, cooking food, playing with my daughter (soccer, basketball, whatever) and traveling.​

Whats your favorite color?

Hmm... I don't know that I have a favorite color. Maybe blue? Maybe black? Maybe white? Very indecisive, but I guess I don't have a favorite color.​

February Athlete!

The First Athlete of the Month goes to Ashley Meyer!

I asked Ashley a few questions so everyone can get to know her better. Here is what she said!






Hey that's cool! That's so nice of them to pick me! Ah geez, now I gotta talk about myself. Here goes.

How long have you been at CF Philia and what made you want to join?
I have been at Philia since August of 2012 and knew from the beginning it was the place for me. The name is what first drew me in. I had heard of the four types of love, Philia being one of them, in a church sermon once and was excited to be part of a gym that knew what that meant and emphasized "brotherly love" among it's members. I knew they would be able to help me reach my goals in the gym and walk along side me in my faith as well. So glad I went with my gut and am still here!

How is your life different after being a member at CF Philia?
I think it's given me more confidence in trying new things, and just confidence in my abilities as well. I was so, so scared to start my first elements class and doubted I'd be able to handle it, and now I've been a part of it for 2 years! It's kind of the same way I feel about a wod. I read it on the board and I think "Oh man this is gonna suck", "I don't think I can do that weight", "I hate burpees", "Thursters? I'm leaving." etc. But I try anyway, and at the end when I feel like dying, I also feel so accomplished! Yay CrossFit!

Whats your favorite part about the gym or a favorite moment?
My favorite part about the gym is most definitely the people. Even though we are all super competitive at times I know that we are all here for each other and want to see eachother succeed. I love when we do max outs and everyone gathers around the one person that's left trying so hard to get a PR and everyone is just as excited about it as the athlete doing the lift! I also have to throw out love to the coaches. I've been lucky enough to be a participant in each coach's class and really appreciate their various styles of coaching and the special things they each bring to the table. We've got a pretty great bunch at Philia!

What do you do for a living?
I mold young minds! AKA-Preschool Teacher.

What are your interests outside of work and the gym?
This makes me sound like such a nerd but I really love to read. And have recently started to dabble in children's book writing....not so sure about that yet. I love finding new tunes and probably watch a little too much reality t.v. But mostly, I just love spending time with those that I love and care about!
Whats your favorite color? I think I appreciate all the colors of the rainbow at one point or another, just depends on my mood. :)
